When alcohol is consumed into the body it is converted to acetaldehyde in the liver. Acetaldehyde is a toxic substance that can be harmful to the body. For the normal drinker, the liver quickly coverts acetaldehyde into a substance called acetic acid. Acetic acid does not have the same toxic or harmful qualities as acetaldehyde. The body then converts acetic acid into carbon dioxide and water which is released through the body�'s urinary and respiratory systems.
According to the findings of a recent government survey, despite the numerous widespread warnings about the potential risk of drinking alcohol during pregnancy, over fifteen percent of the pregnant women that were surveyed said they had drunk alcohol at least once during their pregnancies.
In 2003, 48% of 12th graders surveyed admitted drinking an alcoholic beverage in the past 30 days.
Studies show that women start to have alcohol-related problems at lower drinking levels than men do, partly because women weigh less than men.
